Exhibition Statement
Living in Place- an architecture approach from Taiwan
Collaboration by Sheng-Yuan Huang and Fieldoffice, Installation Designer Sheng-Feng Lin, and Film Director Ming-Liang Tsai
This installation is an enabler that provides opportunity for people to come together to experience space, time, and culture. As represented by Sheng-Yuan Huang and Filedoffice’s works, it is not the architecture, landscape architecture, nor space that is important. What is more critical is the mechanism that is created via their works which ultimately enables people to gather and engage in a common activity. As a result, the collective experience and memories for the people form the basis of community, shape culture, and define “the place”.Living in Place is a spatial framework that invites visitors to enter, participate, and engage with the physical constructs. Whether to see the exhibition, to walk through the space, to interact with each other, or to see the other exhibitions from being there, the exchange, the interactions and the collectiveness bring out the essence of what community embodies.
The Place has 4 components:
• The Stairs: The element that leads visitors to enter but also acts as the demarcation of the “transient” zone.
• The Door: The interface between the transient zone and the inner void.
• The Void: The inner space which becomes a “Place” when people are present.
• The Media: Include film, models and stools that communicate ideas.Creating a void to invite people and activities to flow in, occupy and shape, is central to Huang and Fieldoffice’s design. Film and documentary help to communicate what Huang sees and senses from the environment he operates in; the evolving live models that are continuously being reshaped convey Huang’s design ideas; and stools not only represent the autonomy of users but will document how visitors form communities as they are rearranged and occupied.
